December 1, 2003 -- A message from the webmasterWelcome HomeHappy Holidays, and welcome to our new website! Make yourself comfortable. This site is intended to be a gathering place for all members of our family, old and young, distant and immediate. Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with some of its elements, and consider making your first entry. For the time being, this site will be maintained and moderated by me, Mark Mislivec, though I expect some other family members will want to help manage the site in the near future. The burden of providing content for the site, however, falls mainly on you, its readers. I have attempted to lay the groundwork, but I expect all of you to see that this will be a lasting way for our family to communicate. In the menu bar to the left, you will see a number of selections. Most of the links are intuitive, but some may require a bit of explaining. The archives provide a list of all the Family Announcements and Messages that have been previously posted. Likewise, the Events Calendar lists some important dates in the coming year. (Don't see your event listed? Let me know!). For those of you that want an "@mislivec.com" email address, the login form in this menu will take you directly to your web-accessible email box. The monthly calendar has important dates highlighted for at-a-glance reference. Click a day to see what the event is. If you ever feel completely lost, just click on the "Mislivec Family" banner, and it will return you safely to the main page. When you decide you are ready to get involved, fear not, for I will help you out as much as I possibly can. Don't have a scanner? Send your pictures to me and I'll get them up. Not familiar with Internet code languages? Send me your entries and I'll format them for you. Not sure how to turn your computer on? I may be able to help with that too, just let me know! That's about it. Please contact me in the near future to at least let me know are alive and that the information I (hopefully) have for you is current. If not, let me know that too. Continue reading for answers to some of the questions you likely have. As you've just discovered this site, you probably have a number of questions. If you've made it this far, you deserve answers. Here they are: FAQWhat's the story? When did this all start? The domain name (mislivec.com) was procured in November 2003. It began as a nugget in my head some months earlier as I became fascinated with the development of the new internet medium of "blogging." (I'll get to this a little further down). I decided it would make a wonderful gift, as well as allow me to experiment :)~ and began making preparations. But the internet is so fickle. Why use it? The movement of blogging and internet archiving has been developing for a number of years, and it continues to get easier and more popular. Besides, how often does anyone in our family actually sit down and write a letter? Also, this creates a dynamic space for our family to maintain constant contact. Talking isn't just for holidays anymore, and this has to be better than a once-a-year Christmas card. So what is a "blog," and why use it? Simply put, a blog, short for Web Log, is a frequently changing website. It usually provides an ongoing journal, and links to material on the web. The "why" is simple: it is easy to update and automatically archives everything for posterior -er- posterity This means that what you add to this site today will be accessible years from now. Don't worry, it isn't as bad about holding a grudge! Can I contribute to the site? How? Family members and friends can contribute to the site in a number of ways: 1: You can submit an entry for me to post (this is the best option). 2: You can submit pictures for the family photo album. 3: You can add a comment or message to one of the existing entries. 4. You can request access to the back-end and begin posting your own entries. So how do I contact you? I can be contacted in a number of ways. Got a pen handy? Better yet: send me an email right now. That way I'll have yours too! Ok: Email: Mark@Mislivec.com - It's a toughie to remember, I know! Phone: 617-686-9770 Snail Mail: 15 Santuit St. #2 | Boston, MA 02124 Can I have an @mislivec.com email address too? Of course! The purpose of all of this is to streamline communication among family members. Isn't frank@mislivec.com much easier than, say, frankoman9947@hotmail.com? Also, email is both web-accessible (IMAP) at mislivec.com/mail.html or accessible through any email browser (POP3). I have purchased PLENTY of hosting space so that everyone can use this as their primary email domain. Why not? I'm secretly already a blogger, can you host? Welcome aboard! Our domain is plenty big for everyone. For the few of you who may care, we are hosted by Globat, and our uptime is around 99.98%. Now that's reliability! And last: Why hasn't the page been updated recently? The process of putting this page together is long, and it is difficult for me, a single soul, to keep it brimming with witty content. This is where I turn to you. Please take a few minutes, continue to ignore whatever it was you were procrastinating when you surfed here, and send me a quick hello to post. I promise it won't hurt a bit. Joie noel, y auf wiedersend. Love, Mark |
