Indianisms

I'm not sure if I've blogged this before, but the signs here often have very interesting spellings for common things. It shouldn't come as a surprise. The few sign-makers that are literate are much more likely to write in Hindi than English, so it is a bit of a challenge. Still, before you put a two-metre sign in front of your shop, you'd think it would be a good idea to give it a quick read-through. Right outside my office window now, the bus stop identifies Nalson Mandela Marg. But the spelling can get much worse. Here are just a few that I've seen or heard about that cause at least a light chuckle:

Tea and Snakes
Child Beer
Well Come
Rest-or-rant
Shit Sale
Tee hee. Yet another reason to love India.
