As promised, a re-cap of my VD and International Food Night:
I arrived promptly at 18.25 (18.00 Indian Standard Time), and few of the booths had begun there setup. True to form, the Germans had been peeling potatoes since three, and the Spanish were still snug in their beds for siesta.
It was all quite uneventful, but the food was wonderful. Mom, you would have loved the running from booth to booth an trying this and that. I think they said 18-20 countries were represented, but personal favorites were the Pad Thai (Thailand), the Stuffed Green Peppers (Khazikistan), and the Sweet Pancakes (Korea). The Syrians had the gall to serve real beef, and the French were crepe-ing all over the place.
I helped to provide the entertainment, co-hosting the event. We had some egg races, a water-balloon toss, and a saari-tying contest (which my team always won).
An interesting point-of-note in the evening was when Simin was conflicted about introducing herself to the fellow Iranians on campus. They were all wearing headscarves, and she showed up in Western clothes with makeup. I think she ended up staying away.
Overall, the event was a good time, and it was impressively large and well put-together.
