Getting a strong start

Somehow, seeing the empty calendar on the side of the page always inspires me to start the month strong with posting again. One of these days I may actually completely fill a month with flights. Something new to read every day!

This time I have an excuse: for some reason I couldn't get my site to load for a week or so. The South African government must have decided I was bad for PR. But I'm back (for now) so here's the update (working backwards):

Today turned into a very long day, with the POTUS debate starting at 3am here. There were about 8 of us that stayed up, namely Team USA. Hugh wore the elephant, and I donned Kerry '04 (thanks Eric for the timely delivery). By all accounts Kerry took the cake, though I was less convinced. Let's just say he didn't give the same answers I would have, but I suppose that's why Howard Dean wasn't up there instead.

Went grocery shopping in the afternoon. Let's evaluate: Last day of the week, first day of the month, payday, and late afternoon. Scott made the mistake of getting a cart, and he likened navigating it up and down the crowded aisles to trying to drive a bus in Rome. I can't think of a better analogy.

We also did a reprise of our Zulu dance for the House Committee, and we were given certificates for our "achievement." Good times.

The middle of the week was "hectic" to say the least. I think I left campus all of twice, and once was to get groceries. We did have a little event when our residence lost power for two nights. 400 people without lights, cooking facilities, and hot water, things were starting to get interesting. All the more reason for me to bunker down in the library with my computer.

Last weekend we went to see the SA Warriors, which are SA's equivalent to the Chippendales. Dissapointing performance overall, but highlights included watching a tequila shot off a g-string and the Navy striptease to "Up Where We Belong" from Officer and a Gentleman.

Prior to the strip show, we watched Sarafina over at Mark's place. If you haven't seen it, you must. It stars Whoopi Goldberg, and it is about the 1976 Soweto uprisings. Good introduction to the history here, and easier than Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom

This weekend and all of next week will be consumed with paper writing, things are getting a bit crazy. About 50 pages due in the next 2 weeks, so you may not see or hear much of me.

My favorite Kerry quote from Thursday night's debate:

Invading Iraq in response to 9/11 would be like Franklin Roosevelt invading Mexico in response to Pearl Harbor.
Viva Mexico!

Busy, busy you are, Mark. BTW, John(ny) told me to tell you that he thinks what you're doing is awesome, and that he knows that you're going to be a very important person in this world.

His words, not mine.

Now, if he'd been so smart as a kid maybe we'd've gotten along, ej?

Is "we'd've" correct usage? I may have to add that one in my next race paper!
