From the mouths of babes.

I teach fifth grade.

I have had my kids for 7 days now. They are finally starting to get my sense of humor. One said, "Ms S, you are sometimes funny." I looked at him and said, as deadpan as I could, "No. I am always funny. You sometimes have a sense of humor."

The students have already hounded me about who Mark is in the form of "Did Mark give you that Irish wedding ring??? Hmm?" talk, so last Friday they knew I was single when we were learning about "the suffix -less, meaning 'without,' boys and girls!"

N (a very sweet and precocious little boy) said, "I have an example of some -less words. OK, since Ms S is boyfriendless and husbandless, I will find her a man so she can grow up and get married and then she can have children so she won't be childless--even though she already has 18 children--and we will all make sure she never gets divorced so she doesn't have to worry about being child supportless." He punctuated the air with his finger and grinned.

How could I react to that? I blushed furiously red, gave him a high five, and laughed until I couldn't breathe.

I'll be laughing for days about the "sense of humor" comment. I've already made the people on either side of me in the computer lab read it. Love you!

Amanda,

Where were teachers like you when I was a wee one? I think humor somehow erroneously made it on the four letter word list in district 11.

The humor might be more for me than them, Eric. I need to have a good time or I'll scream!

Speaking of good times, went to a Grateful Dead (now, sans Jerry, just "The Dead") concert with a date last night. I am so dead tired (no pun intended) and bleary-eyed this morning. I can barely teach. At least it's a testing day...
