As promised, my rant on the fall of Martha Stewart.
Guilty? Perhaps. Deserving of the public spectacle she's endured? Certainly not.
Until we see Kenneth Lay crucified for stealing millions from his own employees (not to mention single-handedly causing the biggest single-day Dow drop in history) and Mr. Cheney at least held accountable for his energy interests and "Halliburton," she should not be chastized for something I assume every savvy Wall Street investor has done at least twice.
I'm not defending white-collar crime by any means, I'm just saying it's very difficult to not become cynical about our country's sense of "justice" when she will be sent to prison and lose everything she's worked for because she followed the advice of an insider and saved what, 40 grand? I must admit, if someone called me tomorrow and told me that the value of one of my stock interests would surely plummet by the end of the day, you better be damn sure my next call would be to "sell, sell sell!"
So, Martha's next episode will be on "Tips for Matching Prison Orange," and Cheney continues to hide in his billion-dollar bunker while Ken Lay vacations on Grand Cayman. Does this seem messed up to anyone else?
On these grounds, I must simply declare: "FREE MARTHA!"
